The Republican party in Georgia has stumbled onto an incredibly effective strategy for insuring GOP dominance in red states- it's called ballot questions. It doesn't really matter what form it's in, it can be in the form of voter ratification of proposed constitutional amendments as in today's passage in the Georgia House of a potential amendment banning gay marriage or in the form of a referendum which was the carrot that brought out the rednecks to oust our Democratic Governor Roy Barnes after he removed the offensive St. Andrew's Cross from the State flag. Locally, in the Athens area we even lost a State Senator in large part due to the holding of a local referendum on the selling of "liquor by the drink" in the neighboring Republican county which, of course, brought out all the Baptists.
I've even heard rumors that this is a deliberate strategy which they intend to continue next cycle with votes on other hot button issues like abortion. What can we do to stop this?
